There are many things to do in here, but the main purpose is to contribute to the Guide any knowledge you may have which could be useful. As you mention 'Don't Panic' I assume that you are already a fan of the books anyway, so have a pretty good idea of what may be required!
One of the first things you may like to try, however, is just dropping in on fora and plunging in to conversations. For this you may like to check out /A452125, the Community Soapbox where just about anything is discussed. Alternatively just drop in the /Welcome-Newcomers page where all the cool stuff like how to do Smileys and how to write GuideML and make your homepage more welcoming are explained.
