OK, i'm sorry but when it comes to the intricacies of computer language i need to be patronised! how does one get into guide ml mode in the first place?

I'm sure Titania won't mind me trying to answer that one...
I presume you are talking about guide ml for your homepage?
If so, at the bottom of the screen where you type everything in (after clicking on the edit page button on the right of your screen) you will notice there are 2 choices: Plain text or guide ml.
If you click the guide ml button you should be away
