My critical theory teacher would like to know the answer to this question:

If the concept of real ideology is completely true, that is ideology is defined as a way of seeing the world which we do not actaully realise that we are looking through and which we cannot escape, how come Marx was able to realise that there was ideology and say I am in ideology? Someone must have told him.

But if someone must of told him who? And how did they realise???
Marxism is a very self aware perspective, and self evaluation of the flaws of apllication and theory as well as yourself are very important. After all who can bring about the dictatorship of the proletariat as a hegemonic social force (theres that word!) for the benefit of mankind without realising what is wrong, not just in the current system but with the proposed replacement. Not that I would question Marx, he was right for his time but needs re-evaluating for the modern age with all its dang new-fangled complications!
I love talking to you about this over the internet, you can't club me with a brick or shout me down with your anti-Marxist propaganda smiley - winkeye
you vile whore of capitalism!!! smiley - smiley
Only joking! (well...)
Marx has to be recognised (back to the point now) as the clear thinker he was, his judgement of history was only ever made through cold hard evaluation of the facts, he is the worlds only really unbiased historian. He recognised a trend throughout history and anticipated its continuation, (ie subservient class overthrows dominant class and takes control of means of production, new sets of dominant/subservient classes formed) in the form of the socialist revolution. He was a deeply unemotional man (much to his detriment!) and did not allow his feelings to show. Unlike me (love you!).
Sorry for the lengthy rant! Weeeel you did ask for it, in a very literal sense.

OK, that was a really good answer. Very pretty rhetoric and very persuasive and calming as always.

However, I think you missed the point because I still feel the question hasn't been answered. I don't blame you because the question wasn't phrased very well so as I see it you did a good job with a crappy starting point. Therefore I'll try again.

My point is this: If one of the main features of ideology is that we are unaware of it; how could Marx have recognised it, pointed at it and said 'omigod look at the big hairy gruff voiced ideology thingie breathing down everyone's throats'? I'm not saying it was wrong that he recognised it. What I'm saying is that the whole theory defeats itself because it totally destroys itself in its formation.

When I said 'someone must have told him' I was being quite horribly sarcastic and maybe even verging on ironic. I know nobody could have told him. However, voice tone cannot be conveyed over the internet. Therefore I'm not as daft as I look. Love ya babe XXX
