Working Night Shifts
Posted Feb 8, 2002
This is my fourth of five night shifts working at Sky Interactive. I create, put live and monitor Interactive Menus that viewers access by pressing the red button on their Digital Sky remote control.
It's an OK job, pays the bills and the people are mainly pleasant and fun. However Night Shifts drain the beeejeezus out of me. Apparently in Germany they don't allow women to work nights because it screws up their Wombs and the-like! My womb must be screaming out if this is the case.
One thing all wannabeee night shifters need to realise is your whole brain and body crys for sleep and cannot figure why you're denying it that basic pleasure.... You body punishes you for this injustice by making you feel emotional, drunk and disoriantated! However managers who've only worked 9-5 insist we work nights nights nights because WHAT IF something happens.
I understand what my contract says and I understand the financial imperatives of our services going down, and I realise I shouldn't grumble BUT it's not me, it my tired Body and Brain. Without them i'd be a happy bunny!

University

I want to work at the BBC producing shows for the Internet, Interactive Television, Radio and TV but I don't have a degree - which I think is a prime-requisite for a job! I studied for an HND which is 1 year away from a degree but I studied Broadcasting Techniques and I have had my fill of that subject - plus i've worked in Television for 7 years and I couldn't be a full time student again!
I've just begun an Open University course which will give me a taster of doing a degree in Astronomy... OOOOh it's exciting. I loved science at school but I loved having fun aswell so just paid vague attention in classes, now i'm trying to redress the balance and learn what our Universe is full off. The course should take me a few months and i'm sure it's gonna fire me to do more.

My job is not 100% secure. Not because of my bad working practices, but because we were taken over and who knows what will happen. I'm wondering how or if I could work abroad - America or a tropical Island. Working in IT or Media. Could you help?
