Hya! Yes, I'll do my best to answer your queries on astrology - but if you don't mind, I'll do it on your personal space as it's a bit choppy out there on the discussion forum and your questions are intelligent and interesting smiley - smiley

But I'm at work at the moment (on the 360 site) so I'll do it from home later or in the next couple of days anyway!

Happy to discuss it for as long as necessary. I'm only just learning so it's good for me to get stretched!

Cheers,

Maggy

Hello You!

So, here's my attempt to answer what you wrote:

"What kind of energy is being spoken about there and what is the force which supposedly influences our behaviour? I really would like to know. The "blueprint of tendencies" I don't understand either. What is that?"

Okay... The human body, when it's alive, has an energy field which runs through and around it. This electro-magnetic field can be photographed with something called Kirlion photography. It is, theoretically, the place where our soul resides. Certainly, it vanishes on death (although one layer of it takes three days to disappear).

Whether it's the soul or not, this electro-magnetic field is the reason why we can feel someone's presence near to us before we physically know; it's why we know when someone's watching us and why we can sometimes tell what people are going to say - or we fall in love for no reason whatsoever. Some people are more alert to it than others.

Planets have the same thing. In fact you can even see them with the naked eye if you look at a planet such as Jupiter or Saturn with a telescope. There's a fluctuation in the space around them. They also have normal gravitational fields which pull or push other physical things.

Astronomers have plotted the planets for thousands of years (until about 300 years ago, astronomers were also astrologers)and they noticed similar patterns of happenings on Earth whenever certain planets were in certain positions. From this, they started to be able to work out the likelihood of events.

They didn't have birth times then but, even so, they started noticing things such as a child being born when Mars was rising in the sky was more likely to have red hair than not. Or that someone born with the constellation of Taurus rising would usually have a strong body.

And they started noticing what the skies were doing when miracles happened - or when someone died during a routine operation instead of recovering. And they plotted a pattern which can have no logical explanation except that there are energy fields like the ones humans have out there - and that they somehow create a 'blueprint' for every moment.

When a soul is born it comes into the universe from another dimension, joining up with a body that was created here - but as it comes in, it is affected by the timing of its birth. You can say 'red hair comes from genes' and you'd be right - but I have a family of red-heads and every one of them either has Mars rising in their chart or the Sun (Leo) which gives copper hair. I don't have either - and my hair isn't red (damn!)

Anyway, that's a start. It is, of course, entirely possible that it's got nothing to do with the planets at all. But there is still SOMETHING going on which creates these patterns - and the planets are as good a way as any to plot it.

Hope this goes somewhere along the right lines! Do ask more if you're interested.

Best wishes,

Maggy

Thanks for that. Now I begin to see where the astrologers are coming from a little better. You are very kind.

I must find out more about the Kirlion photography. I have never heard of it before. Sounds interesting.

It is interesting that you say that people noticed patterns of events happening when the planets etc were in the same relative positions. For the first time, I see that this argument maybe does have something to build upon. Personally, I have always been rather hopeless at noticing connections between events so maybe that is why I have always been sceptical about astrology.

I still struggle to think that the electro-magnetic fields of the distant planets can have any significant effect upon events on Earth though. My guess is that there must be many more much stronger electromagnetic fields weaving about us every day from earthly sources. The personal fields that people may create themselves, I know nothing about. I am certainly not "alert to it" at all. Are you, do you believe?
I have looked at Jupiter and Saturn through telescopes but must be honest and say that I didn't see any fluctuation in space around them (apart from the presence of the normal moons and rings). Could you elaborate on that a bit, please. Sounds interesting.

Thanks again. I am still v sceptical and am still wondering if astrology is really born of a strong inbuilt urge to believe that we can find an explantion for everything around us. If we can find explanations for life and everything that happens around us, then we gain a new understanding. If we can understand it, then maybe, just maybe, we can begin to control it. We tend to believe quite strongly in cause and effect and seek meanings and explanations all the time.
But perhaps some things are really beyond hope of our control.

oops , rambling far too much!

Oops...sorry I haven't replied - I haven't been around on h2g2 for a while.

Currently at work...will try to get back to you when I'm at home (if you haven't forgotten all about it by now!)
