matches and bar trick

when i was a boy in the 50's, I had a trick: peel the brown rubbing surface off a matchbox, place it on a penny, set fire to it and a syruppy residue would be left on the penny. wipe the thumb and forefinger with this liquor and rub them together: a plume of smoke would emanate from one's digits, much to everyone's amazement!
In the early sixties the match makers must have changed the chemistry because the trick stopped working. can anyone tell me more about this?
