A Message From Willem's Father

Post 1

David Conway

Dear People,

I will try to get a more substantial message from Willem tomorrow. I realise that he misses talking to you and would like to know what you are doing. He also worries that you are worrying about him. He loves you all and asked to tell you so.

Although he still wants to kill himself, he is OK at the moment. He is under close observation at the moment and we (his family) pray that he may recover completely very soon. We want to thank you for keeping him busy on Sunday morning. It gave us the opportunity to get back from church and prevent him from harming himself.

The clinic he is in is in Pretoria, that is about 250 kilometres (180 miles) from the place that we live. We phone him every day and we'll go and visit him during the weekend. We'll make copies of all your emails and take it along for him to read.

You can reach me at his email address: [email protected] or my email address at work: [email protected].

I do have problems reading messages on h2g2 and his webpage on Yahoo. Would anybody of you who know how to reach his friends there please give them these two addresses. I would gladly pass your messages on to him.

Yours sincerely

Peet van der Merwe

Hallo again everybody,

I left the psychiatric clinic for the weekend to stay with my parents, my aunt Lydia and her husband Harry on their smallholding near Pretoria. It was quite a nice weekend. I did get a lot of time to talk to my parents and to my aunt. I also got a visit from my sister Maryke and her husband Jacobus. My father brought me all the messages that many of you sent me. I spent quite a lot of time replying to those I could, but unfortunately I did not have enough time to write all the replies that I wanted to write. So now I am recording this message into a little tape recorder for my farther to post on my journal. I want to say thank you to everyone who wrote something, thank you to everyone who sent a prayer, a good wish or even just thought of me, and just thank you in general to all the wonderful people on H2G2, to anybody who cares about anybody else, and to anybody who is trying to make a positive difference in the world.

I'll tell you a little bit about what I am doing. In Denmar at the moment I am seeing two psychiatrists, the one asked me to give her an account of my entire personal history. I am not sure, she may be a psychologist, not a psychiatrist, or a psychiatrist that works as a psychologist. I also did psychometric tests. With my psychiatrist I've been mainly talking about my health and about the medication I'm being given, and also a few things about the rules of the clinic.

My roommates are very pleasant, we're getting along quite fine. I have two roommates, Peter, 17 years old, and Garreth, 26 years old. We talk a lot, they have been helping me quite a lot, and I hope I have been helping them a little as well. I have also been talking to some of the other patients here. Basically most of them are great people, and with most of them I am getting along quite well. It is not a problem to get to know people here. I have been doing a bit of drawing, lots of writing. I am reading a book, The Turning Point, by Capra, which is extremely interesting. It was written in 1982, but is still as relevant as ever. Some people asked about the food. The food is good, it is nutricious, it is not as healthy as I would eat ordinarily, but basically I have no choice, I eat what they give me. So for a while I am not a vegetarian anymore, but I will get to that again when I get out of here.

I expect to be here for a few weeks longer, but during that time at least once a week I will be getting messages through to you through my parents who will visit me over weekends. They will also bring your messages to me.

That's all I can say for now. I am feeling quite positive at the moment. I am still not sure what is going to happen from here on, but we'll get to that when we'll get to that.
Thank you very much and all my love to all of you.

Willem.
