Heavy metal on cellos? I'm going to have to assume you're referring to Apocalyptica. Guess they're more widely known than I thought...

Yep, Apocalyptica it is. Shim introduced me to it. You should see us bouncing around the room, headbanging and playing air-cello...

I haven't had the opportunity to hear anything from their second album, Inquisition Symphony. I was wondering...is their cover of Metallica's "One" any good?

Their version of "One" is very very good indeed. It's the main track that Shim and I like to bounce around to, especially when it goes mental 4 minutes in. In fact, I'd say the album was worth grabbing just for that track alone.

It rocks.
Even if it is 3 minutes shorter than the original.

A second album? Out of touch or what?
Harvester is one of the good ports on the first one, IIRC, as is the arpeggiated break in Puppets. Soul food. Have to dig it out when I get home.

Ports? You've been working with 'puters too much.
Hmmm. Never thought of it like that.

Bastard!
Anyhow, same thing really, innit? Hardware and software.
Maybe Sven should have considered the write once, run anywhere MIDI virtual machine.
Maybe I should go back to IE, focus was simple then.

I think I have just found the ideal birthday present for a cellist friend of mine - who's made the mistake of saying that a classical music education makes it hard to play other forms of music.
Now I just have to hope one of the CD's has managed to find its way to this side of the planet.

And what side of the planet would that be? I found it here in the U.S. of A. And I'm fairly sure some of the people in this forum are in the UK. If you can't find it locally, you might try www.cdconnection.com, I know for a fact they have both albums. Whether or not they'll ship to your side of the planet is a different story.

My side is Australia - & I've ordered it from the US, now I just have to hope it'll arrive before the birthday.

Inquisition Symphony arrived - I listened to it - I love it - I wonder if the cellist would be satisfied with a Kylie Mynogue (or whatever else is in the Top 40 this week) CD???

Apparantly, they've actually supported Metallica.
Metallica were very happy about this for several reasons. Firstly, they're extraordinaly tight-fisted and a very proud about being the only touring band to actually make a profit. And nothing's cheaper for a support act than sticking 4 guys on stage with a couple of microphones. Secondly, their ego is satisfied by the warm up band only playing their songs.
I really dig their version of Refuse/Resist by Sepultura though.

When I was looking for the CD I did a web search & read somewhere that the had opened for Metallica & I seem to remember that you can order the Apocalyptica CD through the Metallica website.
I suppose you could look at this as exploiting the new kids but I prefer to think of it being Metallica supporting these seriously bent cellists - & the seriously bent musician deserves all the support that can be drummed up.
I think my favourites are the originals though the covers are good.
