So, have you read much Lem?
My first encounter with him was The Cyberiad when I was a youngster. Then I came back to him after reading Hofstadter (Godel, Escher, Bach). I'm just finishing up Lem's 'Imaginary Magnitude' http://www.chapters.indigo.ca/books/item/books-978015644180/0156441802/Imaginary-Magnitude?ref=Search+Books%3a+'imaginary+magnitude' and am finding it wonderfully challenging and -- wonderful. I'm pretty sure it's heading toward the Levi-Straussian 'I'm not a person -- I'm a place where things happen' idea of intelligence/consciousness.
A very interesting and very challenging read.
I suspect many would find it simply incomprehensible nonsense.

I read 'His Master's Voice' many moons ago..
Now that you have reminded me, I may put in a request at the local library
