When a search is carried out a list of matching titles appear but next to it is says "relevance" could you please explain the significance of this.

You know, it's something I've never thought of ...

On most search engines where they have relevance % I have always taken it as merely an indication - that is the compilers idea of the extent of the information's content to the search subject. I've always checked most listings until I find what I want.

I hope this helps a little - to me search engines have always seemed a thing that, as you get to know them you understand the compilers less and less and follow your own instincts more and more
