That's why I spend my vacations working with bricklayers, and tile layers, and carpenters, and renovating our own house... Not to mention all the fascinating stuff one can learn from helping my cousin renovate, especially when his friends are there, they all used to "occupy" houses in Berlin and can really improvise cheaply and practically!

Good - I bought and rebuilt a ruined house in Devon in the early seventies. It taught me the difference between drwing two lines across a 600mm thick stone wall and writing the words 'form opening' and actually doing it. In 2000 I rebuilt my wife's ancestral home (little more than a shed) but that included quarrying 25cu m of stone out of the ground. We also used no cement - just mud. It has weathered pretty well and cost us absolutely nothing.
