Well, I'm not really sure what I'm gonna do with this web site... I LOVE the idea of being part of something like the h2g2, but the question is, what part. So, I guess I'll share the experiences of a student in Medical School. I'm a proud member of the University of Virginia School of Medicine, Class of 2004, (Oh, and any V-Tech fans or UVa-haters... I said a proud member of the Medical School. My Alma Mater is Mary Washington College. I'm only a Wahoo by association. <grin> and we're all subjects of an experiment of sorts.
You see, they've made major alterations to the school's curriculum, mainly to give students more free time for self study. I must say, I quite enjoy most of it. Four hours of lecture/lab most days of the week, and we usually have the rest all to ourselves. The down side is there has been a tremendous amount of compression in the information. For example, Gross Anatomy has been compressed from one and a half semesters to only one. It tends to make things a bit hairy at times. But, our first batch of mid-terms are over, and I've passed with dignity, if not flying colors.
I plan on updating every now and then, if anyone should be interested. I'm also curious if there are other med students with similar curriculums, or how other they handle the other, more lecture-intensive model.
Oh, and one more thing: Freeing time for self study surprisingly does NOT mean decent personal free time. I leave for class before 8:00am, and return home around 10:00pm. But I find the challange to be surpriseingly exciting!
Until later,
Ja! Doc Guyver
