Today's lunchtime read is "Bella" from June 1992. I don't think I'm going to get much out of this one.
Studies are just beginning to be done on dementia, and Vitamins A and E and carotene are being found to help prevent it.
Jane Fonda wants to have a baby with a donated egg - even back then she is already past the menopause.
In a little "quiz" where the type of man you fancy will reveal your personality ()Seal has a head full of dreadlocks.
Quote: "Chevy Chase, star of the new film "The Invisible Man".." I remember that film so clearly - was it really that long ago?
The rest is padded out with "real life" stories of people surviving accidents, retiring abroad, and living with illnesses and disabilities.
The recipes are for salads - the lists of ingredients are as long as your arm but that may be because of all the flavouring herbs and seasonings in the dressings.
Warm pear, mushroom and blue cheese (the mushrooms and garlic croutons are the warm part)
Spiced beef and apple - a marinated, fried and thinly sliced steak tossed with sliced apples, mixed leaf salads and tomates.
Orange walnut and chicken - ooh, I could do that tonight, was going to make chicken salad anyway, although it's rather autumnal with the oranges, walnuts and lambs' lettuce in it.
Prawn, dill and avocado salad with a sourcream/greek yoghurt dressing.
Why is the fruit tart in a June magazine made with canned fruit?
A humorous article about flying on holiday ('Plane Facts') includes the discomfort of sitting behind a smoker on the plane . Not to mention the psychopath who will predict all sorts of doom, saying "That's why an airport's called a Terminal".
There are knitting patterns for kids' playclothes that even in 1992 surely no toddler would have wanted to be seen dead in.
Mums are already complaining "My 12-year-old son is fascinated by computer games".
Ooops - lunch hour's over! More tomorrw.

I envy you this experience. It reminds me of when I was a teenager & would be delighted to find back issues of magazines like Jackie at a jumble sale

I'm not sure I want to admit this, but I'm going to...
I used to get Bella on a regular basis, because I loved the personality quizzes so much I didn't mind reading the articles about people, but my excuse for buying it was to do the big crossword
Bella these days is totally not the same, so I'm glad to have access to online quiz sites these days, so I can do personality quizzes whenever I want, in the privacy of my own home

Ah - for your eddification, then, Sasha - if you voted for Seal, "You love being noticed ... maybe you secretly lack confidence and such attention helps combat this. Try and be an individual in your own right."

Are you redoing the quizzes and are you getting the same answers?
Sounds like a really fun project. Wish I'd kept some of my old magazines. I don't even have my old school mags but my teacher from 50 years back had them when we visited
Key: Complain about this post
