Okay, it's 2004. How did that happen? You know that thing people say about getting older and wiser. I seem to have successfully bypassed the wiser part.

Only found this thing yesterday, and I've already spent an unholy amount of time browsing through and discovering the wonders of it. had a go at my first entry as well, to share my hard gained experience of the Aussie outback. Any constructive criticism would be much appreciated. Or just random abuse if that's all you can muster.

Just got back to the UK from a trip into the deepest middle of nowhere I've ever been. Drove from Darwin to Perth with a few other muppets in a brace of Landrovers. We spent most of our time in the Kimberleys, and now I know how Crocodile Dundee felt - no phone, fax, computer, TV, all the 'necessities' of modern life, and very few people. My advice to anyone visiting, the only way to experience the outback is under your own steam. Under no circumstances go on guided tours, 4WD excursions, scenic helicopter flights or anywhere else that you find hoards of whinging backbackers obsessed with the cost of everything. The spirit of the place is its vast emptiness, so hire a four wheel drive, pack a tent, and hit the dirt tracks. Oh, and mind the crocodiles. And the spiders. And the snakes. And the kangaroos that jump in front of your vehicle. And the mozzies. Enjoy.
