I'll have a look.

On the other hand I've been using broadband wireless for years for practical reasons, given the remote Ares I often visit and take my laptop with me everywhere in addition to a tablet, though if Google doesn'fix their dysfunctional word system I'll probably chuck the latter.

Main drawback with either and just about anything e?we with LCD display is that one can't use it in the open sun.

If one does the screen turns dead black, so so e ki d of shelter is required.

If anyone has a need to use a digital device outside keep an eye out for something that has a Pixel Qi screen. My first tablet, the original Notion Ink Adam had one. You could turn the back lighting off and it looked like a black & white LCD display and was perfectly legible in direct sun. It was actually still in color, but the colors were muted. It was just too bad that the tablet turned out so useless due to some hardware and software issues. I know there were some other companies using Pixel Qi screens on laptops and netbooks.

Gnomon - time to move on

My "Tolkien's Dwarves" entry is coming along nicely. I've been working on it for three days now and it's nearly ready for Peer Review. But I'm going down to Wexford for a week, and the internet connection there does not really allow editing, so I'll finish it when I get back.

The entries on Gandalf and Algol are in Peer Review, while a few others have been picked: Forbidden Planet, High Crosses, The Great Telescope of Birr.

I've withdrawn my Aelric/Alaric entry as it needs a bit more work.

Interesting! I notice it's not in Peer Review yet, so I shouldn't post specific questions, but the whole Entry does rather push on the boundaries of the 'factual' requirement.

The fact here is the large body of history that Tolkien invented, and which lends itself to scholarly research. On the other hand, it is more than academic (speculative, undecidable) to ruminate on such things as 'Race or Species?' -- since once you have revealed 'Tolkien is not specific' there is really nothing more to say. You are imagining the possibilities in an imaginary world. What factual status can second-level imagination have?

It seems to me that you are sorting in your own mind how you are going to picture the various peoples in the books. That's fine. It may help others in their own picturing. It just leaves me feeling a little queasy. Where does fiction begin and end?

Have a great hollyer in Wexford!

Good questions, R, and I'll think about them while I'm in Wexford.

Why do I have an option to edit that?

That's not for you, it's for me.

I understand that. But why do I even have the option?

It's been quite a long time since I've published an entry, but as I remember it only the creator of an entry could edit it (other than sub eds and eds, of course).

I put that link into the GuideML so that I can edit it in the way I like (in Alabaster). I don't know any way I could prevent you from seeing the link but if you click it the system will prevent you from actually doing the edit.

I can edit it, too. Please report this to Pastey.

Ah, never mind, then.

I should explain that I look ay entries in Pliny since that's what looks best and what the Readers see. But I edit them in Alabaster since the Pliny editor doesn't work.

I have no intention of reporting anything to Pastey. We were told quite clearly not to report any bugs.

Gnomon - time to move on

Since I've been away for two of the last three weeks, I've got a bit behind on my writing. I need to:

1. Send in the pictures for my High Crosses entry.

2. Go through Tav's suggestions for the Gandalf entry. Since I didn't have the books with me in Wexford, there wasn't much point in trying to remember exactly what it says in the books.

3. I withdrew my Aelric entry until I've got a few quotes from the books to give a flavour for the type of books they are. So I need to do a bit of work on this. Since one of the books is on Kindle, this will give me a good chance to try out how good the Kindle is for quick browsing.

I've done tasks 1 and 2. Now to read some Aelric.

I've been mostly tied up with getting a new machine and OS up to a serviceable level to support writing.

Hopefully, and probably, I've now got a serviceable and stable installation, though I still need to learn to use some new editing software that didn't come pre-installed.

Nice thing about this system, (Android-Chrome OS), is that when it is working well, it needs much less maintainance than Windows and the maintainance tools operate much more quickly.
