Well, I ran the British English (Sequel) Thread archiving program this morning for the first time. It grabbed the first 924 postings without any apparent problem, but ran into a problem in posting 925 or 926.

Off to find out what's odd about them.

Hmm, nothing apparently wrong there. It must have been a glitch. I'll start it off again at 925.

Are you archiving smileys as well as text, Gnomon?

The smileys appear in the text as html code. For example, Wand'rin Star's star smiley in the very first posting back in 13 March 2001 appears as:



The "plain" in this merely indicates that I am using Plain skin to extract the postings - it has less overhead than the others, except the Betsie skin and I couldn't get Betsie to work properly.

I can use an editor to do a global replace later.

I've created a kindle book of the first 1200 posts of the British English thread. Now I need somewhere to save it so that others can access it.

I'd be interested in a link to something like this, if it becomes necessary.

Oops, working in the dark!

I archived the first few thousand postings, but my program only records the U number of the poster, not their name, so I'm thinking of rewriting it and running it again. Might do that tomorrow.
