OK, I've juggled around the last few paragraphs of the first entry now.

Well, I've re-listened to the bit of "In Our Time" where they explain the basic reasons for the split

but it's difficult to sum it up in a nutshell.

Perhaps something along the lines of

"As the Sunnis and Shi'ite harboured centuries-old deep-felt theological differences, these two political units were at war with each other ..

or "harboured a centuries-old enmity"...

It doesn't really mean anything different from your "hated", though, I suppose.

The final paragraphs come together better now - in the fourth last one, however, both of the first sentences start with "Alexios" -slightly too repetitive.

I've changed it to:

These two political units were at war with each other, as the Sunnis and Shi'ites had deep-seated theological differences, while both were on reasonably friendly terms with the Christian world.

I've added a Further Reading section at the end of the last entry A63492393.

I've thought about my use of the phrase "a time of lawlessness", and I think I will leave it as it is. It is certainly a simplification, but then all history it. I don't want to get into a complete history of the 'Dark Ages'.

People seem to be fairly happy with these entries as they are, so perhaps I should submit them to the University as a Project now. This means they will be passed on to the wonderful Galaxy Babe for sub-editing, then through Peer Review for nitpicks.

After discussion with Recumbentman, I've decided to change this back to the original 'hated'. It was my first thoughts, it is immediately understandable, and it fits.
