Someone in a forum discussion about that comic made a good point. If you want to anthropomorphise, it's much sadder to consider the plight of the Voyager probes. They're never coming home and we'll never catch up with them. They're getting farther away and are more distant from us than anything we've ever made.

There's a good chance we'll see those little robots on Mars again.

When they sent a probe crashing into a comet's tail, as a last kamikaze mission, I saw Patrick Moore describing its demise. He obviously didn't expect to be as emotional as he was; he kept brushing away his tears with impatient annoyance.

It is like losing a very valuable limb, at the least. I treasure that involuntary display by Patrick Moore.
