Gnomon - time to move on

El is going to Sligo to play in the Sligo Baroque Music festival:

http://www.modelart.ie/sligobaroque_programme.html

Her group are labelled as "The Next Generation of Irish Period Performers". The group were looking for a cello player for this concert and they asked El. Hopefully she can become a regular member of the group, as it will give her good experience playing in a small ensemble; at the moment all her playing is in large orchestras.

I heard them in the DIT on Tuesday -- it is a terrific learning environment, doing continuo for a small group. The recorder player Sandra has great momentum, and David on the keyboard is a sound accompanist; she can pick up the method from him. Best of luck in Sligo!

I missed the concert in the DIT because El gave me the wrong location. I turned up a minute late at Chatham Row, when I should have been in Rathmines.

I am so impressed to see her name in there with all the others. One day we'll be able to say "We knew her when.."

El and all her group were very pleased with the concert and there was a good audience. The only hiccup was that the counter-tenor missed the rehearsal beforehand and didn't show up until five minutes after the concert had started, without an apology of any sort.

El seems to have accepted as a full member of the group now. Her cello teacher is recommending that she buys a baroque cello.

El rushed home after the concert so that she would be able to attend the Chapel Choir at service on Sunday morning, her first time singing in Trinity Chapel, which is a beautiful place to sing. To encourage students to come along to the ecumenical service, they give them sherry and pizza afterwards.

Will she be singing there every week?

My son is thinking of coming over to Dublin while he's in England - probably at half term. He would love a free pizza! And the chance of hearing some nice choral singing. What sort of music do they sing in the Chapel Choir?

I don't know, because she left the house at 9 yesterday morning to go to choir, and I haven't seen her since. I'll talk to her this evening.

Great girl!

I was a member of the very first TCD Chapel choir. Up to the nineteen-sixties Trinity had an arrangement with St Patrick's Cathedral who sent their choir and organist down to do the Sunday service. I went along a few times and was not impressed by the choirboys picking their noses and showing general signs of boredom. Eventually the tie was broken and a student was made the first Organ Scholar: my roommate ('wife' was the traditional term) David Milne, who founded the Chapel Choir, and later the Camerata Singers. David now conducts the Guinness Choir.

It turns out that the free pizza was a special, possibly for the first day of the new year, but they get sherry every week.smiley - biggrin
