The BE index project!

Hi Gnomon!

I thought I'd see if I could contribute. I decided to have a go at posts 4000+. So far, I have reached 4200, and thought I should check before going any further, in case I'm wasting time.

I've added "Miscellaneous" and "Off Topic". It's on a temporary page, which you could copy and paste from if you wanted to add it to your index at some stage (with whatever editing you felt appropriate, of course):

That looks good, K. I'll try and combine yours with mine tomorrow. I didn't bother indexing the Off Topic stuff. I suppose an incomplete index is better than no index. I've only done the first 140 postings, so it might be better for me to tackle something like 3000 - 3500 next.

At first I too didn't bother with the Off Topic stuff. But as I went thru the postings, I realised that much of the vibrancy of the thread lay there; moreover, some of these were things that people might like to look back on.

So I went back and added anything I thought may be significant, thinking that ultimately their inclusion would be an editorial decision - in other words, Gnomon, I think you should have the final say! smiley - smiley

The Miscellaneous section is somewhat of a 'cop out' (hmm, must ask on the thread where this expression comes from), as I'm not too good at choosing categories. I'm sure you'll find a proper home for them.

If it's alright with you, I'll continue from 4200 up to 5000. Would it be too much to ask for you to take the responsibility of indexing new stuff, i.e. post post 5000? (Ooh look, I found a way to use post twice!)

Perhaps you could ask if there are other 'regulars' willing to take responsibility for indexing other sections of the thread?

Finally, the issue of a British English page. The arguments for having one are good. Would it possible to create one, yet retain the thread until it dies a natural death (I have become rather attached to it)? I am not in favour of a page which many people can edit; rather, it needs one person to take overall responsibility, and again I am looking pointedly at you, Gnomon. smiley - smiley

Whether the page would be called 'British English', or instead something broader and more inclusive, is a matter for some reflection; it would be nice to have room in the same place for discussions on, say, Amercian English, etc.

OK, plenty of food for thought. Perhaps some of the other contributors might be interested in discussing the matter further here in this thread?

If I post a post in the post post 5000 section, can I be said to post post post 5000?

Oops! I was carrying on with my work on the index, then I realised that you may already have started copying stuff. And you have. smiley - sadface

Not only have I added new entries, but also updated previous ones with new references. I'll stop for the moment, but how best to proceed? I was going to suggest you wait until I complete 4001-5000 before transferring.

OK, K. You keep going to 5000, then I'll incorporate what you've done. It will be easy to remove duplicates.

Also, have noticed you put a dash between the word and the link(s), whereas I haven't done this so far. I can incorporate dashes if you prefer - let me know.

Dear Gnomon,

I hope you are well, and I'm so sorry I've been away from the BE thread. Certain changes have meant I have much less access to the internet. I do stop by occasionally for a read, as I love to keep up with things if I can.

But my work on the index has ground to a halt, so if you are planning to keep the index going, why not copy and paste from my temp page (link in first post of this thread)?

Keep the wonderful articles coming! smiley - smiley

Hi Kaeori, nice to hear from you. I've been busy with other things, so I haven't got any further with the index, but I will be happy to include your work in it when I get a chance!
