Gnomon - time to move on

Hi Elly. Are you the Elly who wrote the article about oboes?

I wrote the edited Guide Entry about Dublin. You can find it in a search. It tells you a lot about Dublin as seen by a tourist. The most important things to know if you're going to live here are:

1. Irish social life revolves around going out for drinks in the pub. Irish pubs are not like pubs anywhere else in the world. In general they are packed so full of people that you have to pack in like sardines in a tin.

2. Dublin Traffic is woeful at present. The public transport is limited and overused. Cars choke up the city, so certain parts of Dublin see a 90 minute drive into Dublin in the morning and the same out again in the evening. If you are young, fit and can cycle, that's probably the way to go. Taxis are expensive and in extremely short supply.

3. House prices in Dublin have gone through the roof. If you're not planning on staying, this may not seem to affect you, but it does have an effect on the price of renting, so beware!

Another person you could talk to is Duncan Jones, who has only been here two years, but is planning on staying. You'll find him at http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/U96742.

Best of Luck,
G

Thanx, G!smiley - smiley THAT was fast- DE told me about Duncan, but I thought I'd just ask you first, just 'coz he mentioned you first.
No, I'm not the Oboe Elly- I think there are 2 Ellys here, and she's on the choir and an Alto as well...
Oh, well...
Yes- I intend to stay, assuming that I'll get the job, and being a Kibbutznik- I cycle every day, so it's not an issue for me.
I'll tell you if I have something else to ask after I read your entry.
Thanx again!
Elly

I've started a guide entry on this - http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A581339 - let me know if that helps and what other information you think I should include.

DJ, I'm surprised by your statement that the church has greater influence than in other countries. The only way in which the church influences my life is that my children get days off school on church holidays. The Republic of Ireland does not recognise any religion as a state religion.

St. Vincents has terminated the contract of one of the nurses who became pregnant on the grounds that being a single mother is not compatible with the moral principals of the foundation and you can hardly walk in Grafton street without somebody forcing pictures of aborted foetuses but I suppose that isn't in the spirit of the guide entry so I'll remove that comment.

You're probably right. These things pass me by because they've been around so long, I assume they're normal.

I shouldn't worry about anything along those lines at all. It's pretty much a rule that applies to the Irish themsleves but those same principles would not be applied to non nationals..
(This advice is brought to you by smiley - stoutsmiley - stoutsmiley - stout)
