Because they did.
I talked on that thread about the conception of Britain and the Union to be to do with Empire.
Try looking up a bit of William Blake or reading a bit of E M Forster and you might have a clue.
But its endlessly tiresome for someone from the English countryside having to try to explain this stuff.

Why would you say that if I said I was English?
You will go a long way to find someone that doesn't think British/English are the same thing. I meet it endlessly on h2g2..and yes it gets tiresome...
