You should try a more conspicuous Subject line next time Bel, otherwise it will attract all those people who want to say:

By Jove, Effers, what a nice space you have designed here smiley - magic

Also, you may be pleased to know that there is an Effertzstrasse just next to my flat.

You know, Effers, you must be the most interesting person here on hootoo that so many people come and visit your PS. smiley - envy

Yes well I do post to a vast array of different types of threads on hootoo. That's why I love this place so much.

And the title you chose for this 'discreet' little thread couldn't have been 'louder' apparently. And it's been really nice...

The meet date is decided now, it's 26 April.
I do hope you'll notice this although you've unsubbed from everything. smiley - erm

Hi B'el

I've unsubbed only theoretically because I'm fed up with stuff being yikesed, out of the blue and the behaviour of a certain researcher, who sometimes shows up on threads that I rather didn't, (not nick this time). I find it infinitely depressing that some people carry on behaving in a certain way for weeks and even months, years on end, and ruin the experience for everyone else. As you know I'm certainly no smiley - angel but it's usually a brief bit of irritaion/bad behaviour on my part, and I make an effort to turn it around. But this grinding destructiveness....words fail me actually

I've got to the stage now that some threads are just too depressing to even read, because of all the rubbish I have to wade through to get to the good stuff...I'd rather not see them on my ps

Thanks for the info, and the smiley - hug

Returned. smiley - hug

I fully understand that. I unsubbed from as many threads as I could briefly before christmas, deleted my friends list even, because it seemed all too much.
And I don't even get near the depressing threads you mention. smiley - smiley

There'll always be the one person who tries to ruin the experience for everybody else, but I do my best to ignore it.
And no, I've never counted you in that category, you may be irritating at times, but then I guess so am I for others, so it's no big deal. smiley - biggrin

Tell me more about Heisenberg to save me from googling. smiley - laugh

Post 33

Effers;England.

Oh my god. It was Werner Heisenberg and his discovery of the 'uncertainty principle', known as Heisenberg's uncertainty principle, that revolutionised the understanding atomic matter at the most fundamental level. It was a revolution in thinking that changed evrything. There was a brilliant doco on the beeb the other night talking about all the great physicists of the early 20 century. His discoveries are as least important as Einstein's, more so in my opinion.

smiley - laugh I could go into a load of chemistry and physics if you want, we did all about it at school. But I'll maybe leave that, eh? unless you really want. I was so enthralled by the doco the other night. It was wonderful.

smiley - biggrin

Goodness me it's good to have a normal friendly conversation with someone on hootoo.smiley - ok

Post 34

Thank you, now I don't feel so guilty about not knowing him. No need for the in-depths chemistry and physics, natural sciences are not my strong point (as if you hadn't guessed). smiley - biggrin

The beeb does brilliant documetaries, I'm always sorry that I can't watch it - apart from BBC world, that is.

And I'm up for a normal, friendly conversation any time. smiley - ok

smiley - biggrin Excellent. Honestly I can't tell you how good that sounds.

It's really frustrating for me sometimes on some of those other 'threads' because I do enjoy deep discussion about ideas and things. But mentally I'm not someone that can cope when too much cr@p and game playing goes on from idiots. I literally start to feel I'm going crazy. Happens in real life too sometimes.

Anyway I'll shut up about such rubbish now.

And if you can stand it, you should look up some stuff on Heisenberg. He should be immensly famous to everyone, not just if you know physics etc. His ideas have fed into technology. In fact I think the working of the silicon chip on one level depends on ideas in quantum physics. Such people don't always get the all round recognition they deserve for what they have contributed to all our lives.

I've just unsubbed from a thread that started quite interesting but now has a somewhat unhealthy combination of posters. So far, it's OK, but I don't think I want to watch the development. smiley - laugh

I guess you're right and many people don't get the recognition they deserve for their contributions. I honestly think the Edited Guide is a step towards amending that. We have an amazing amount of entries about people I would otherwise never have heard about - plus there are so many various conversations. It's amazing, the things I've learned here. smiley - magic

I assume you know this joke: http://www.gomilpitas.com/humor/119.htm

smiley - geek

Heisenberg also appears in my branch of mathematics (Lie algebras, pronounces as 'Lee' with a short vowel, not as 'untruth'). He's responsible for the relation xy - yx = 1, which I eat for breakfast every day.

Sorry about that outburst of geekiness! I couldn't help smiley - wah

Hey Toy Box I love your outburst of geekiness. That Rutherford anecdote is wonderful. I can so relate to it in terms of being an anarchistic and creative thinker myself in general things.

>>At this point, I asked the student if he really did not know the conventional answer to this question. He admitted that he did, but said that he was fed up with high school and college instructors trying to teach him how to think.<<

I can so relate to that. Was the student really Bohr?

Please feel free to bring your geekiness here anytime you want. smiley - biggrin

I thought you might like that one smiley - biggrin I don't know whether there is any truth in the anecdote (apart from the suggested methods of course, which would all work). Who measures heights of buildings with a barometer anyway?
