It's impossible to prove him a racist I agree. I wasn't actually trying to. Just giving him a little rope. It's become very clear to me now what he's about.

Yeah...there's a bit too much benefit of the doubt giving. Some of it is naivity. Some of it is to do with people not wanting to admit their own underlying assumptions.

In this case, I thing someone is being very careful not to be too obvious. In life, one finds that racists are very seldom blatant. It woukld be far too easy if they were! As it is, it's easy to castigate anti-racists for not being able to quote chapter and verse.
