Being raised in Kalamazoo, I have to say I think you're giving it a bad rap. Perhaps the atmosphere is not to your liking, but the college atmosphere (there are 4 colleges in Kalamazoo) gives it a unique flavor.
I highly recommend visiting the Boogies cyber cafe in downtown Kalamazoo.
