Down here in Penzance, the most exciting 10 days of the year are (is) the Golowan Feastival which runs in June, around midsummer. Ten years ago it was decided to resurrect an ancient fair of the quay which had been stopped by the authorities in the middle of the 19th century when the Mock Mayor (a sort of King for the day a la hunchback of Notre Dame, usually the most disreputable drunk in the town)and his cronies tarred and feathered the local chief of police when he tried to stop a parade. The result of the resurrection is a wonderful festival of music, theatre, parades etc that is now attended by thousands of people from all over the world. After the first year we decided to re-instate the Mock Mayor elections and as an actor I created the most objectionable but lovable disreputable rogue and was elected for the next eight years. I was challenged frequently but no-one could usurp me, until last year when the horrendous Helga the Hormonal wiped the floor with me and was elected by a resounding majority. My shame was compounded by the fact that she happened to be my daughter! A very dirty campaign was launched this year by the both of us which resulted in a draw, altho'everyone will tell you that I beat her hands down. It's all very confusing to an outsider and I recommend that you visit their website at www.golowan.com It's well worth a visit. I bet you didnt expect so detailed and boring a reply! Wow - the fair sounds fun. Reminds me of when they resurected the fair of St James' Day at Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight not so long back.
