that may be so, but an editor should work on a 386 (text) and a P75 (GUI), not a 3Ghz P4. with no slow down. jedit is really bad, but it's writen in java. emacs is bloated too and woddles on high end machines let alone low end. gvim I find is still slow not to the same degree as xemacs but still slow compared to notepad.

I agree (in principle) but I wouldn't be running XP on a 386 so ...smiley - whistle

nope sorry if you know your stuf you can get XP pro or 2000 to be secure but it just aint there in terms of security and religability.

no windows machine should be connected to the net in my view.

it's a view, although I'm a rapid BSD fan that don't mean I dislike windows. XP (home & pro(and I although I use pro I still say that home is probally better for your avaerage domestic user) is (IMHO) not bad as for security as long as the user stays on top of the security update & uses a good firewall & AV product (plus an ounce of common sense) it should not be an issue. I still maintain the biggest problem is not the O/S but the users.

the idea is that it's the programmers that have common sense and the users that don't.

never forget that.

Don't, just had my dad on the phone. He was installing the drivers for a new printer and having problems, the software could not detect the USB ports - one trip into the bios setup later (having now enabled the USB ports) all was OK.
Now I'm an old style geeksmiley - geek so no problem but in this day and age is it right that PC's are being sold in a state that requires users to mess with the bios just to get support for built in stuffsmiley - huh
I mean how many average users are even aware that the bios exists, let alone how to modify itsmiley - huh
