I say old chap, it's not true! You can post these links to your Personal Space. As long as you don't say 'You must contribute cash to these causes...' then there's no reason why you can't have these URLs on your personal space.
For example, this Researcher has quite a few links coming off her space, one of them being Amnesty International:
