CHRISTMAS!
I've just put on the Clootie Dumpling for it's first 5 hour boil. I've got orange and lemon oil all over my hands - great for my new keyboard.
A small compensation for being ill I suppose, but it was fun. Now, I have an open bottle of Sherry and an open bottle of Port. What AM I going to do with them I wonder? 
Oh, right, make banana mincemeat for the mince pies.....

Clootie is the scottish christmas cake, boiled in a cloth (ergo, clootie) and hung up for a few weeks to allow maturation before being re-boiled and then baked on the day. It's basically a fruitcake that has a 'skin' of flour on the outside to seal in all the goodness which can either be eaten or discarded. tastes best with carnation milk.......mmmmmmmmm
Banana mincemeat is just a variation on the normal mincemeat recipe with, strangely enough, banana in it. Also mmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Acht, ye twa are jist a pair uv old curmudgeons! The x-mas preperations are underway now - the first tradition is on it's way to completion (I love this sort of cooking, thiry minutes to put together, then you can't do nowt but sit and watch TV for hours, except the occasional topping up the pan with boiling water and me with tea)
