Cloviscat Posted Aug 22, 2000
found this for you, re that java discussion :
Gadgets
Because JavaScript has been causing some serious security problems on site, we have taken the decision to phase out support for it. But because we realise that this will disappoint a lot of people, we're going to replace it with something - h2g2 Gadgets. The idea is, when someone in the community comes up with a cool JavaScript gadget, they submit it to 'The Gadget Crew' (a group made up of expert Researchers and/or people inside h2g2) who check that it's OK, does what it says it does, and would be useful. It can then be added to our stock of gadgets, and anyone who wants to use it can do so simply by including simple tags.
As an example, the 'Who's online' gadget is pretty common, so now, in GuideML, you can simply type, say:
Click here to see who's online
and you get the magic link without all that tedious mucking about with JavaScript.
Naturally, it'll take a little time before all the cool gadgets you currently have get approved, but the upside is that once they're approved, everyone gets to play with them, and you don't need to know anything about JavaScript.

* a slightly peeved look - which I dont have an emote for!
* polishes monocle in a hurt manner!
I did NOT just make it up. I thought of the monocle emote ages ago and have used it in a couple of places, but I take the point re toungue in cheek
Intresting abut the Java/gadgets thanks for finding that - I'll have a look around.

Hiya Cloviscat. What gives... hmm.... quite a question that...
My answer would have to be "Father Christmas" - he gives, especially on December 25th (or 5th December etc, depending on which country you are in).

Bluebottle Posted Aug 30, 2000
Oh, I am sorry to hear that...
What is that you've been very naughty with? Are you out on parole soon? Or have you been so outrageously bad as to commit the worst possible crime of growing up?!?!?
java
Cloviscat Posted Aug 30, 2000
The sheer opportunities for being bad as an adult are infinitely superior to any puny attempts one may make as a child!
I have manged to be bad this week to the tune of costing someone several £k - and it was legit too!!
Otherwise I just get to be mildly wocked to memebers of the general public
And yourself? Good as gold? It is election time after all...

Me - yep, I'm good. Afterall, I am broke, have no money, and am an unemployed student, so have no choice but to be good.
Or that's what most people think anyway
java
Cloviscat Posted Aug 30, 2000
I do remember being an unemployed student Too miserable to do much. No internet in those days either (not THAT long ago!)
You'll just have to save it all up for a really good opportunity.
Why is it that being unemployed doesn't feel like a holiday, whatever politicians might think???

Lipsbury Pinfold (Part-time Timelord) Posted Aug 30, 2000
Hello you two - nice to hear from you both
It would be nice to be unemployed enough to at lest say hi to people more often - but having been there I wouldn't swap
How is the campaign going BB?
java
Bluebottle Posted Aug 30, 2000
How's the campaign going - good question. I've absolutly no idea - hopefully no news is good news.
Today I got another formula "We don't want you to work here" letters... Oh well...
PFOs are the worst
Lipsbury Pinfold (Part-time Timelord) Posted Aug 30, 2000
I hated those - I wish they'd at least tell you honestly what they didn't like and then you could do something about it
It's not much consolation but if you're still doing the monster training you can have my monocyle - I find I'm not using it as much as I used to
PFOs are the worst
Bluebottle Posted Aug 31, 2000
Thanks - I could do with that.
Oh well... I'm filling out another 3 application forms today. I wonder if I'll get anywhere this time?
PFOs are the worst
Cloviscat Posted Aug 31, 2000
I'm at the other side of the equation: reading through piles of crappily-filled-in, carelessly written application forms: Although - I hasten to add - I am sure that Bluebottle's are a work of (unrecognised) genius
