What bit of the RAF did you work for? I've got a friend (U142065) who'd love to work for them, but wouldn't be allowed to fly because she needs glasses.

I was a long distance RADAR technician.
There are lots of other jobs in the RAF beside flying..
Someone has to make sure that the aircraft are safe for the stupid officers to fly!!!!!!

She joined the ATC, but she didn't know anyone there, so she left. Now she's trying to get a Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award.

The ATC is a good grounding for what the RAF is all about. Sorry she had to leave.
Wish her luck from me with the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze though. If she gets that it will help get her into the RAF.....They like that sort of thing!!!

The folk she's working from from school have absolutely no sense of distance. They've planned to walk five miles, camp overnight, and walk another five miles. And they think that walking 10 miles will take them two days!

Backwards or on all-fours (hands and knees)?????

Not that I know of... Maybe they think the tent will weigh them down...

Maybe they are going to see something/someone five miles away, camping overnight and then coming back?

I have a friend, about your age, who is in the RAF, and worked in ATC & Radar at Drayton and others. Loves the job. Agrees with you about the officers (and he's one himself!). Everybody I have met from the RAF has a silly laugh. Is it just coincidence, or does it help to have a silly laugh when applying for the RAF?

What sort of places can you get the awards in? My friend's in a Youth Group, but I can't join because it's on at the same time as I go to Brownies (I'm a Young Leader)

Hello!
No I never bothered going for the gold award. We got lost doing the silver. We were supposed to meet up at a checkpoint and drop off some of our equipment from our rucksacks. Instead we got lost and had to double back carrying this really heavy rucksack in blistering hot heat (I sat in the middle of a field and cried!) After that the gold didn't seem very appealing!
I did the awards while I was at school (many moons ago!)

The blistering heat is something that never happens where we live (Scotland)
