Gun Shop

Walking in the East Village of Manhattan I noticed a Gun Shop (at some distance). Being a spineless limey I didn't even have the courage to look in the window.
Can anyone tell me, as a foreigner can the shop legally sell me a lethal firearm. If so what identification or documentation would I need.
Further, if I was a native New Yorker what conditions would then apply.
PS DON'T PANIC my interest is only academic.
