Any idea what report he's referring to when he talks about "the violence that bigotry supposedly produces"?

Don't know the report...but he's got something of a point.
The Elephant In The Room is that sectarianism really is pretty damned closely associated with Football. The fun and games is part of The Old Firm's commercial offering and without the revenue it attracts they'd be akin to middling English First Division Teams. There was a lot of stupid tutting when Salmond tried to attack the problem...but he was basically right.
Of course, it also spreads into Real Life and teenagers do get murdered for wearing the wrong shirt in the wrong place (including the grandson of a friend).
But, no, outwith football nobody seems to give a toss.
