Most of your troubles stemmed from not giving yourself nearly enough time to catch a connecting flight. Two hours between scheduled flights is pretty much the minimum amount of time to be safe, considering that delays in air travel are frequent, and you were going to be dealing with two customs procedures on each leg. It seems slightly drastic to condemn an entire country for your lack of foresight.
