Firstly, I wasn't involved, so I'm not sure this is totally accurate.
Della was a Researcher. Her behaviour wasn't great. Some say she was provoked, others say she was out of line. What really matters is the way it disrupted the Community. People took sides, there were heated debates running all over the site, people left, and it all turned nasty. In the end, she was banned for her behaviour, but it took a while for the Community to heal.
So when people mention the Della Wars it's a hope that we'll avoid dividing up the Community ever again.
At least, that's how I see it.

My recent summary. I was one of the so called Dirty Angels - not central protagonists in the wars but people who tried to keep a middle ground and attempted to sort things out but fought a bit dirty with it. In the end I lost all sympathy for Della despite not agreeing with what the other side were doing, so that colours my summary. http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/alabaster/F19585?thread=8232431&skip=0&show=200#p109273839 The Della Wars thread (which was an attempt to resolve the conflict that by that stage was affecting many people across the site who weren't even part of the wars): http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/alabaster/F19585?thread=606523

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
