I was just passing by and noticed the journal p.s. about New Orleans.
I am in Louisiana, not New Orleans exactly, but about 60 miles North(Baton Rouge).

What are the big companies there? I'm considering N.O. for a post-college career. Are there any large, international corporations that would likely need interpreters or foreign liaisons?
I envy you, living in LA. I've only been there once, but I absolutely adored it. It was so different from Los Angeles! The air actually smells /clean/ there! I could hardly breate without the smog!

The Tourism Bureau might need people to travel around convincing large groups to hold conventions in New Orleans. Mardi Gras is an industry here, as is tourism.
Exxon, Dow, and other processing plants are along the Mississippi if you consider living within visiting distance of New Orleans.
New Orleans is expensive, Metairie and Slidell are worth a look for living arrangements. When looking for a place to stay, ask if the place has *ever* flooded. It is illegal for them to lie about that.
Please, familiarize yourself with Hurricane safety procedures. The whole tropical storm season is from June 1, through November 30.

Lots of information. I wouldn't have thought of asking if it had ever flooded! Considering the last couple of weeks in CA, it might be a good idea to know that! We were up to our eyeballs in rainwater here!

If I remember correctly, it was a local television show that had the bit about flooding a few years ago. The topic was how to shop for a house. The premise is that Louisiana has several areas that are known to flood regularly. If you ask directly, the seller/landlord says no, it has never flooded, and it does, and can be proven to have done before... you can sue them for failure to disclose the previous flood information.
I didn't realize it had been raining that much in California.
The most important thing you should know about New Orleans is this:
New Oleans is five feet below sea level, and sits close to the Gulf of Mexico... When a hurricane is forming in or moving towards the Gulf, do not wait, get out of New Orleans and into Baton Rouge. That sixty miles inland makes a big difference. If you wait, the hotels will be full, the interstate will be packed etc. And, don't listen to the locals who say they are going to throw a hurricane party and wait it out.
