According tho the French, it's not really French.

They have a saying 'He speaks French like a Spanish cow.' I manage to get a giggle out of French people by saying (in an approximation of French):
'Sorry - I once lived in Canada, so I speak French like a Quebecois cow.'

Whenever I see a Greek word, I never know whether to pronounce it or find the area underneath it.

Actually...although I've never tried it seriously...it's another good example of how you can guess from other languages. English, mainly. We all know more Greek than we imagine.

Eg...if we know that 'Beer' is 'Bira'm (spelled Mpira), we kan ask for a small one (Mikro) or large (Megalo).

Then there was the time I was driving 'round the Cyprus mountains looking for a particular historic church. There was nobody around but an ancient guy with a huge mustache, black cap and baggy trousers. So I guessed:
'Egglesia?' (see also 'L'eglise; ecclesiastical)
Hey presto!

Even 'Thank you'. Once you know that 'eu' is pronounced 'ef', it all becomes clear: Efkharisto = eukharisto = eucharist. And 'Poli efkharisto'...as in poly...gon.

'Thoste mou ena frappe, mia gala, sketto, parakalo'. That's 'Please may I have an iced coffee, with milk but no sugar.'

I lived in Episkopi, but not consecutively for 6 and a half years, that was spread over 3 tours with the RAF! Still love the place my eldest son was born out there.

If I could move back there and get a job I'd be there like a shot smiley - ok

Yes, I know Episkopi. It's where you turn off the motorway and head up the Platres road. We stopped there a couple of times to buy cakes.
