Well the subject line says it all. It just so happened that as I was going through a particularly bumpy stretch of road in my life, I read the chapter of the Guide in which Arthur "decides" it was time to go insane. "What a pleasant thought." I said to myself. But can it be done that easily?
Sanity... is it optional?

I think yes. It is optional. But some people have no option but to go insane because of their lot in life.
