What a massive sense of loss!
We met only once, across a crowded literary lunch in Melbourne to launch "Last Chance to See", I got to ask him a question and he got to give a witty reply.
I am not competent to surmise the importance of his body of works other than if a writer be judged on the number of lives that he touched then DNA was a giant among modern writers. I am not competent to compose a eulogy that would do him justice so please let me borrow from another great Bard, from Julius Ceasar I think:
"His life was gentle
And yet The Elements did so combine in him
That Nature could stand up & tell The World
This was a man...
