London, centre of England, Financial heart of Europe, home of the mother of Parliaments, birthplace of Michael Caine, protector and burial place of Karl Marx, cradle of democracy, home (for many years) of Arthur dent, Douglas Adams, Ford Prefect & Dirk Gently, need I say more?

Wrong, I think you'll find Manchester is the center of England. Frankfurt is the financial heart of Europe. I would not call London the cradle of democracy, did you live there during the 80's ? Thatcher?? Need I say more?

All the other things are in the past, a city should be a living breathing fun place to be.

What about the traffic? the tube lines? the cost of living? one of the lowest quality of life ratings in Europe? Even Athens scores better and they shot people there.

Point taken,
however have you been to Manchester (Hulme perhaps), Frankfurt (drab ruhr town, with no charm whatsoever) and Athens (smog related deaths, no marbles, etc) as for the present, lets see, Tate modern, Tate (unmodern) Hoxton, Brixton, Camden, Notting Hill, Alexandra Palace, first run cinemas, concerts, the theater, Ken as mayor (let those good times roll again) as for the milk snatcher I think you will find she devastated the rest of England especially the north far more than London, and by the way I was in Germany, Portugal & Madeira for most of her reign of terror and so missed the worst of it, we still have one of the most vibrant cities in the world, with transport links to anywhere you can mention. Quality of life? whatever you want or need is within your grasp, and long may london reign

Regards

Antoine

PS where are you at that is so groovy?

Having lived in London for a 1.5 years I know all the things you list are there. But for that does not make London the place to live, wonderful place to visit and see all the things you listed, but it is just a decaying museum with no soul.

I have been to Manchester and I have a friend who move there last year.

I agree that Frankfurt is s***e place, but I was only refering to it as the financial center of Europe, which I think is true. See the number of business flights to their airport per day compared to Heathrow.

I shall given in now and call this a draw, as it is the same back and forward I had with my friend Sara, who wanted nothing more than to live in London. Later on she tried it and now wants nothing more than to live in Gothenburg?

Me? I am now living in Copenhagen (see my H2G2 page) to see my view on this place. Personally I think the best place in England I have lived is Brighton, cool, fun, easy to pop to London and get back again, sea, sexy Swedish tourist during the summer on the beach .....

An honourable exchange of frank and candid viewpoints with neither party's opinion altered, this is surely the shape of things to come,

I have to dissagree with everyone the only place to live in the world is Glasgow. A go ahead city with loads to do compact and bejou. Less than half an hour to spectacular scenary, which i feel is the best in the world. Try it for size youll either love it or hate it.

I agree that London is great for a visit, having tried 9 months of life there or should I say existance there. If you have money then great but otherwise forget it.

Best of luck to anyone who lives there.

Cheers
eno

Hi eno,
I went to glasgow once, looked pretty groovy to me,
I then stayed in a place called Stuarton for a week, right in the middle of the mushroom season, with a bunch of born-again christian hippies, I particularly enjoyed that part,

PS I was born in London (one of the few)
