Felonious Monk - h2g2s very own Bogeyman

Just thought I'd pop around to see you while my New Model Army uniform was in the wash and try and find some more agreeable points of contact. So what do you reckon to the new Iain M. Banks, then? I think I've read all of them now, and this one is probably his best. I quite liked Excession (but the ending was an anticlimax).

agreeable? me? You got the wrong guy, mate! smiley - winkeye

The latest is "Inversions", right? I liked it - but I don't think it's as good as some of his other books - it was a bit tame in comparion...

The last was 'Look to Windward'. I quite liked 'Inversions', probably more historical novel than sci-fi. It was rather gruesome in parts but, then, what IB book isn't? Obviously, both the Doctor and DeWar were from the Culture, but I'm not sure I understand that bit about the dagger (apart from the fact it's a knife missile) and the stones going missing from the pommel and re-appearing.
So enlighten me if you understand this plot device. I won't spoil your enjoyment of Look to Windward by going on about it.

The stones are those memory-form devices the Culture is so fond of - hence on her trek over when she had to use some she wasn't selling them for cash, but using them to hurt people - but you don't find that out till the end of the book when you get to hear about their real purpose...

Ah, so what did for the torturer and his assistants? I'd always assumed that was the dagger (which was a knife missile, yes?) There certainly seemed to be an awful lot of knife-related deaths by the end.

BTW: Why 'Colour of Love'? Any reason? Is there a Culture-based RPG now where you get to play a GCU? I think you'd like the names in Look to Windward: 'Resistance is Character Forming', 'I Blame the Parents', 'Lapsed Pacifist' etc.

It was a knife missile, or several, memory-formed from the jewels in the dagger - which is how it was possible for her to be in one place while some people where dying in other places...

The name? check out http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A446672 - though it's nothing special...
