could be worse

my throat was so sore this morning i could barely talk. and we were scheduled to go to a registery for some last forms about the new house. mom had to do most of the talking...
second day of welding - *I* slept through it in the afternoon, but poor miss kitty was too scared to go through the staircase to the garage and did it on the carpet instead. mom forgave her instantly, the poor kitty has been so good about going one last round before we go to sleep and waiting until somebody wakes up in the morning, she must have been under a LOT of pressure.

fanfic rec:

"xander mercenary" by kevinm. yet another halloween fic, xander dresses up as tagon, and because of his direct uplink, petey materializes too. petey is actually the only character from schlock mercenary, but there is a secondary x-over with stargate:sg1, and while xander and jack together can be overkill, if you add petey and his firepower to the mix...
i like this fic mostly because it doesn't describe xander having hidden intellect or getting a boost by the possession, but instead petey is gently encouraging him to have more self-confidence. the sequel with the main storyline (both glory and anubis) isn't quite finished, but it's mostly loose ends.

the peking soup was NOT good for me - sore throat todaysmiley - sadface
wednesday, on the SF&F meeting, my newest publisher approached me about the short story translation he'd assured me there is no hurry... I got less than half done before the move, and it's DIFFICULT. actually more of an ill-researched article than a story, and once it's finished it will look more like an annotation/critique rather than a translation. and it requires COMPLETE concentration.
so I asked peri not to come up today (she likes to talk to mom for an hour and then keeps interrupting about what to do and where to put stuff and....) and started re-reading and editing the finished part... only that today both the electrician AND the installers for the stair-chair decided to show up. Good news: if I manage to translate another 1000 words, i can send the first half for the preliminary editing round. Bad news: i won't have the time (and constitution) much less the quiet i need to do that before going to kish. and my computer there isn't set up yet, just a dinosour laptop without word program smiley - sigh maybe i can do the research for the annotations by dial-up. mom's non-surgery messed up my work plan badly.smiley - wah

rec:
not fanfic, though I might do related fanfics soon
anyone here who hasn't read the webcomic SCHLOCK MERCENARY, go do it RIGHT NOW. all 10+ years of it! it's worth the time.

happy happy place

both mom and i weren't feeling very well today, but still, a trip to the BIG shop for all sort of things (listen, we aren't shopoholics, but we are for all practical purposes outfitting 3 appartments + the house in kish, and we are pathologically unable to plan that: we need this sort of curtains for one window, another for the other window, this many bed covers and that much material for furniture covers, so alright, let's get it all on one trip. we shop as we get ideas.)
so i'm pretty off my feet when we get back, but i have already reservations for thai massage (Pure. Heaven.) accross town. and when i got back, it didn't much arm twisting for mom to agree to chinese food (not fast food/take out, from a real restaurant.) (she DOES spoil me so smiley - blush). soooo...
2 hours of massage by a masseur who recognized me from before as a good tipper, a bowl of peking soup (breathing fire), chop suey and fried rice and 2 gyosa, and i'm in my happy happy place.smiley - flyhi

fanfic rec:
STILL searching for that avengers/buffy x-over, but here is a favorite: the "lone flower" series by vathara, a buffy/bleach x-over. Yet Another Halloween Fic - what if for the character buffy dressed up as, her body was like a costume? or...
quote:
Shunsui cleared his throat. "Hypothetically speaking-"

Kisuke straightened, wariness dissolving into eager interest, which was as swiftly hidden behind his fan. "Oh, this is going to be good."

Juushirou sighed.

"-Maybe, just maybe, this Rayne character used what he got from you, along with various other weirdness, to set off some kind of kidou that let people take on the abilities, and apparently mind, of whatever they dressed up with." Shunsui paused. "Now, imagine a sixteen-year-old girl got Juushirou's kimono."

Under the shadow of a green-striped hat, gray-green eyes widened, delighted. "You possessed a living human being?"

great Ukitake voice and POV, accurate portrayals of the bleach characters, especially Zaraki and Yachiru (from the 3rd story: "Sometimes you got to find the guy you want to fight," Zaraki said with a great deal of satisfaction. "Everybody ought to know how to scare the hell out of wimpy bad guys."

"Her suggestion involving vinegar, his liver, and a spoon was the tipping point," Juushirou noted. "Er… you don't actually let her do that?"

"Hell, no!" Zaraki looked affronted. "You never know where guys like that have been.")

and a very VERY original look at the demon used to create the first slayer. i think have read this one about 10 times!

grandmum's drawers (no, the other kind)

went to the hairdressers, made disappointing re-discovery that without make-up I look like a slightly pudgy boy. the very short haircut doesn't help. not looking at the mirror doessmiley - smiley

anyway, there is this mahagony drawer comode, practically the only piece of maternal grandmum's dowery to survive WWII and the dost-war ecnomic depression. bro had brought it along to tehran. during the break-up he gave it and 3 original art neuvo chairs (mom already had the table) to peri, our housekeeper, who gave it back to us as per previous agreement (she got my entire sitting room furniture AND diningroom table). bro's decision might have something to do with his sister-in-law remarking in peri's presence "let's take them along and dump them near the new house." what-ever bro's problems, he adored grandmum and such disrespect toward her heirlooms...
well, grandmum got tired of the dark color and had it painted white, so i sent it and the chairs to have the paint removed and stained in the original color. now it's back and mom says they got the stain a shade too dark, but it's GORGEOUS! I JUST WANT TO HUG IT! smiley - loveblush

fanfic rec: I was searching the twisting the hellmouth archive for a story where faith infiltrates the avengers (maybe?) to free Thor, and found the "heir to shield and hammer" by bruneor. the series is unfinished, but the third story, "live from new york" is particularly hilarious.
quote (from the 4th story about the 3rd, after xander got telephone advise on how to handle a demon, and giles is getting a report from the avengers):“Thor, he was fighting beside the God of Thunder?”

Jennifer’s smile turned to a grin of pure mischief, “Looks that way, good thing to as it was Thor that blessed the swords that Xander used on that thing.”

Giles started to smile, “So when he was destined to meet his God…”

“That’s right,” Jennifer grins again, “It was funny, and afterward Steve asked him how he could believe in the Asgard and worships them as Gods so easily. Xander looked at him with a puzzled look on his face, then reached out and poked Thor in the arm with one finger and said, ‘Seems pretty real to me’.”
