Hati Posted Feb 20, 2007
We will have elections the next week, so there's quite a lot of dinners happening these days.

How unlike the UK - I'm afraid there is a great deal of apathy here when it comes to elections and politics in general. I just made an LJ post about how the United Kingdom is turning into a surveillance society. I think one of reasons this is happening is the general apathy to politics in this country means the government can pretty much do as it pleases. The fact is, as long as the Great British public has the freedom go out at the weekend and get completely blotto they don't really care what else happens.

I'll keep an ear open for the results on the BBC World Service news

I don't think UK differs in general from most of the countries.
Our elections will be on 4th of March. Politicians will win, no matter the party. The only interesting thing about it is e-voting.

HappyDude Posted Feb 20, 2007
Ah... something against on principle - I don't mind electronic voting machines providing that (1) they are secure, and (2) they provide a paper trail. But any form of voting that does not provide a paper trail that can be audited will not get my vote. That said e-voting should pretty much guarantee your elections some news coverage over here, as it's something the UK government is keen to push.

Ah no, it's not about machines. I can actually vote from home, using my ID card and my puter. Very convenient.

HappyDude Posted Feb 20, 2007
1: Can it be audited?
2: If you use your ID Card is your vote still secret or can the state now connect who you voted for to you?
It would not work here as we do not have ID cards (and although the UK government is very keen to introduce them, I'm very much against them - it will be yet another encroachment on our liberty).

I'll look around if I can have more detailed information on it. Right now there's this dinner waiting for me.

The principles look very sound - providing there is independent oversight to ensure those principles are implemented and maintained it might be a system I could live with.

Well, there's a lot of completely un-independent oversights, so in general it makes all the same as they all have different interests. And after all it's more or less our national pride under question.
Key: Complain about this post
