How did you go about citizenship? Was it having a career? My son wants to move abroad,he's a qualified butcher,but wants a career in plumbing.

Citizenship isn't really an issue. I'm British and retain my British identity and passport. Because I live in an EU country, ie Portugal, I don't need to alter my nationality. If you live in a country longer than six months you are expected to apply for residency. The rules aren't too complicated and you will generally be expected to prove that you can support yourself, rather than relying on state help. In my case, I'm funding my existence from my own reserves, but as long as you can prove you have a job in the country concerned or have enough personal wealth, that will normally suffice.

So if my son came into a european country with a career.would he GET A JOB?

I think it must depend on the country. Portugal is relatively poor as an economy and the wages are terrible. My financee works for a local company and is paid abismally for what she does (my opinion) but the cost of living here is so much less than say the UK. Unemployment is also high here and finding work is difficult.

That said, many countries are crying out for skilled trades people. AFAIK, you can't get a good plumber in the UK for love nor money. Those that are good demand top prices and always seem fully booked.

BTW, I'm back in the UK next week to organise renting my house. (It's been empty for ages). I need a plumber to replace a leaking sink - if your son could help...
