There is only one thing worse than being Gosho, and that is not being Gosho

Hello Ron

"I, too, am normally very keen on spelling and grammar, but I usually know when a person has just 'followed their ear' and made an error, rather than them being semi-literate or stupid; and I refrain from commenting on it in such a sarcastic manner, if at all!. (Please DO scan for errors in this reply)."

We have to use smileys when we're online to minimise misinterpretation because there's no eye contact or body language. I'm going to use one at the end of this sentence to hint that I'm merely pointing something out rather than being angry smiley - smiley

That's also why I used the 'smiley - winkeye' smiley in my post about the spelling of Hegel - to hint that it was meant as a gentle dig, a bit of good-hearted ribbing smiley - biggrin Not as sarcasm.

I know what you mean! Ignore my overreaction to your (intended jocular) posting. I'm a grumpy old s*d!

Speaking in general terms, I see too many postings on h2g2 that are literally riddled with mis-spellings, atrocious grammar and fundamental untruths. One can tell that many of these postings are written by people that no longer care about such things, and don't bother a fig about it!

Some, of course, occur because many of us can't really type (I am such!).

You are right, in one sense, to take a stand for the protection of our beautiful language, and for this you should be applauded! I often feel as though I should comment, but don't have the bottle. I would be inclined to go too far and really upset my h2g2 colleagues.

Don't worry Ron - it took me two years to work up the bottle to actually submit an entry to PR, and another year to start commenting there and apply to be a Scout!

I do care about spelling and grammar, and although people often say (quite rightly) that language changes, I don't much care for change purely for the sake of change, which is what I perceive far too much of these days. I'll forgive someone every time for typing mistakes... up to a point - we don't all touch type and we don't all have the time to preview every single message we send, but sometimes a posting can be almost unintelligible because the writer simply doesn't bother to take care with their keyboard skills smiley - headhurts
