Who's out there?
Blondie Posted Apr 20, 2000
It that a lot or a little for this site. I am new to this "place".
Oh yeah, and I am blonde so that's my excuse for just about ANYTHING.
Hello!
Who's out there?
Bald Bloke Posted Apr 20, 2000
Thats fairly average for this time of day but when it gets up into the 70's the site slows right down and you get a lot of time out errors.
I'm sure one of the aces (h2g2's meeters and greeters) will pop round and see you soon
But in the mean time as your new you might want to have a look at the newcomers page http://www.h2g2.com/A5752
and maybe say Hi in the forums http://www.h2g2.com/forumframe.cgi?thread=47839&forum=617
The best way I have found to get to know this place is to click on other researchers names (which takes you to their home page) and see where they have been going and contributing to.
Remember if its coloured its probably a link

Thanks Bald Bloke, I'll check out the newcomers page.
Say, I noticed that most of y'all write with an English accent.
Are most of you guys in Europe? This could be fun.
I love the way the web connects people who live so far apart.
I was born and raised in New York City, but I live in Texas at the moment. Honestly, I feel more at home when I travel to Canada than when I am here sometimes! My use of the word "y'all" was my phony Southern (US) dialect, by the way.

h2g2 is the most international site I've come across on the Web.
I'm in London (UK), as are the h2g2, servers but researchers a spread out all over the planet (and sometimes off it!)
One of the things which amazes me about this site is that although it is mostly in english, there are a lot of researchers who speak and write english as a second or third language.
In most cases you don't find out until you come across an entry which gives it away.
How are you getting on with finding your way around the site?

COOL! You're in London, and I am in Texas and we are both online right now! Way COOL!
I followed your links, and I am progressing nicely. Thanks for checking up on me! I added a link of "who's on line now" to my page, and I will convert it to XML as soon as I can get to it because it's something I need to learn for my job anyhow. I also submitted a discussion topic but I don't see it posted anyplace. Perhaps it's waiting to get approved or something? Whatever. I just felt like letting of some steam about a story that's been in the news constantly for the past 5 months here in The States. I don't know if it's news over there or not ... it's the the case of the Cuban boy who's mother drowned while trying to smuggle him into the US. There was a major development in that case today, and it's hogging up the TV airwaves. That's why I got online in the first place!! No sports on TV!!!
Anyway, thanks for keeping tabs on me Bloke, and look for my page to get more sophisticated as soon as I can figure out how to STEAL ideas from everyone else!
What's the fish symbol about?
Who's out there?
Bald Bloke Posted Apr 22, 2000
You mean = "< > <" with the spaces taken out and no quotes
Argh! Ever heard of the babel fish?
I've had to go and look the various smileys etc up.
consult http://www.h2g2.com/A155729#12.1 or if that won't work use the "dont panic" button at the top of the page and go to section 12.1.
I was assuming you are familiar with the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy in some form or another, (radio series, books or TV series),
if not a good starting point might be DNA's page http://www.h2g2.com/U42 because its all his fault for writing it
Followed by http://www.h2g2.com/A155729#1.4 after which the idea that a trilogy can consist of five books may not seem so strange.

Thanks! You are taking such good care of me!
Do they have "dumb blonde" jokes over there
across The Pond?
Who's out there?
Bald Bloke Posted Apr 23, 2000
Plenty have you seen http://www.h2g2.com/A227440 yet?
Who's out there?
Blondie Posted Apr 23, 2000
As a matter of fact, yes, I have seen it. I have also received all of those blonde jokes via e-mail. Sometimes I change the word 'blonde' to 'Texan', for example, before I forward it on, just because I am so evil. I think you guys are going for FORCE me to read the book, aintcha? But you know that blondes don't like to read anything besides Vogue and Cosmo, right?!?!
Perhaps I'll submit some of my better jokes to this place...
I get 2 - 3 dozen per day.

Shorty Posted Apr 23, 2000
Well you can put me on your mailing list Blondie, I like a good joke or 2, my E-mail address is on my page.
Who's out there?
Bald Bloke Posted Apr 23, 2000
You mean you manage to read Vouge AND Cosmo!!!
At work at the moment we are into redhead jokes because we've got a victim who bites!
Same jokes different victim
As you've got a collection of blonde jokes why not put them into a Guide entry and then post a note in forum at http://www.h2g2.com/A227440 I'm sure bluebottle will be glad to add a link to it.
As for reading the book(s) of course we won't FORCE you !!!
it will just be the books, tapes of the radio series, videos of the TV series and we might manage to add a couple of Dirk Gently's for good measure.

Blondie Posted Apr 24, 2000
Oh, I am SOOO much smarter than the average blonde that I can handle up to five (5) fashion mags at a time!!! See, if a magazine or a book or whatever has low picture to word ratio, it gives me a headache! But if there's a lot of glossy photos compared to BIG words, I do quite nicely, thank you!
My personal joke archive is on my PC at work. I'll take a peek tomorrow or on Tuesday and see if I can't beef you the joke collection here. Although I may not have as many as I think I do, once I weed out the dirty ones! But I'll look at work tomorrow.
As for reading and listening to the books, well, isn't it enough that I watched Star Trek as a kid?!?! And I did see the movies Close Encounters and Contact, doesn't that count for anything?
Now go tease that redhead!
Who's out there?
Bald Bloke Posted Apr 24, 2000
Teasing redheads will re-commence tommorrow morning, we have a public holiday today,
As you like a high picture to words ratio I won't recommend "A brief history of time" as light reading as it would give you the biggest headache of all time (it gave me one).
For reasons I won't explain Star Trek etc. just don't cut the mustard around here!
Ps have you seen this weeks edition of the h2g2 post, it's published on Mondays, the latest editions at http://www.h2g2.com/U54963

Ok I relent, you obviously can't live without a Star Trek fix so try http://www.h2g2.com/A284979

Very funny.
I am NOT a Trekkie!! I never was either. When I was a little, a very little kid, I had the hots for Captain Kirk, that's all! I found a link on someone's web site to a Virtual Kirk URL and it was TOO funny.
Okay, you have helped to ruin my next weekend. I will have to go buy the damn book(s). But that means I am going to be in a BAAAAD mood all of next week!
