Elian the alien
Posted Apr 16, 2000
I am troubled by the situation of the poor little brainwashed Cuban kid. First indoctrinated by an aging dictator and now brainwashed by well-meaning relatives. No matter what happens he's the loser.
The thing that bothers me is the assumption that his life will be "better" in the US just because he has more freedom and more things. How free is he if the rule of law can be so easily ignored by the zealous? It's certain that material possesions won't make him a better person. It seems like many of the people I respect and admire had pretty rocky childhoods. The "Miami relatives" may be handing Elian a snake wrapped as a present.
So in short, a commie Dad is better than no Dad. If it is true that his mother was the girlfriend of the owner of the boat that sank, then I suspect she wouldn't have passed the test of a responsible parent either. But the political dynamics would have made her a hero in her Miami family anyway.
Send him home with papa and watch him close(ly).

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
