I have an enquiry. A couple of years ago a very close relative of mine passed away from ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). It developed for maybe one or two years before any positive diagnosis - Although at the time we understood there was nothing to do to prevent the disease. Although I understand the disease is rare, my family manged to find a few references in the medical literature about this condition - In a nutshell it was not well understood. I would hope that that more information or help could be offered today for those and their families who would undergo the suffering that this disease brings and hopefully help its prevention, management and understanding. I can imagine that any condition that brings about a slow probable death is awful, but understanding what is happening and what can be done perhaps would help give hope to some.
