Whats Fraserburgh famous for ? Its a fishing town, and ignored the oil boom in north east scotland in the sixties, to its cost. Young fishermen used to compete for the most spectacular car-related death.
Grew up there till the age of seventeen, and worked in the local Fine Fare, stacking shelves, and then onto Gray and Adams - the local lorry factory, building trailers, for five months.
Now famous as the heroin abuse capital of Scotland (Scotsman newspaper, 1999) - 2.5% of the entire population (according to the article) now are heroin abusers - the highest percentage of population in Scotland.
My claim to fame ? Went to school with Mark and Dennis Forsyth - the "twins" - who now seem to own most of the pubs and clubs in Fraserburgh.
Moved out there at the tender age of seventeen, and only return to visit relatives.
If you go there, you must try Bicocci's Ice Cream - near the Alexandria hotel. Nicest icecream in the known universe!
Oh, and you have to see the boats in the harbour. Impressive. Or depressing, if you see the reduction in the number of boats over 30 years.
