John the gardener says, "Free Tibet!"

Hi Alex. Someone from the h2g2 welcome-wagon will no doubt be along shortly. In the mean time, I hope they won't mind if I say welcome. I like the Version idea; I've not encountered that before... very interesting.smiley - smiley

Thanks you for liking my version idea. But I have to confess something. It isn't my idea it is from the website "I think" were a person whose name eludes me, writes down thoughts. I saw it and loved it. I will move that form my intro to my journal I think. Thanks for the warm welcome.

You seem like you know what your doing here, I am new as you know. I wrote up some journals and sometimes they are not there. They are just gone it just says the "this is were journals go" message. If I write a new journal they all come back... For a while. Is this normal?

I've never heard of anyone having such a problem... is it possible you are simply hitting the "back" button in your browser and ending up on an unrefreshed copy of your page?

Greetings Red, I represent the official welcome wagon, the ACEs (Assistant Community Editors). If you have any further questions, you can drop me a line. Meanwhile, the official ACE homepage has a pile of links that will help you get started, and it's a good reference point for you until you get the hang of this place. http://www.h2g2.com/A214796

Enjoy your stay. As a representative of Kiev, I'm sure you'll have all sorts of new things to enter into the Guide, and I look forward to seeing some of them. smiley - smiley

That is strange. Your page is displaying three entries at the moment: "On the version system", "On getting hooked up", and "On Religion". If they go AWOL let me know.smiley - smiley

Well it looks like it's all fixed, all I had to do was quite and come back on. Thanks for all the good encouragement.

Hello again, if I write guide entry and I want an editor to look at it what do I do?

Well, apparently if you want your article looked at by a (sub-) editor, you just have to wait 20 minutes for me to show up.

If you want to get your article approved, just submit it by clicking on the 'Submit Entry' button. I checked out your topic, and few entries on h2g2 mention Hacky-Sack, and none deal with it exclusively. Your entry looks well writen, and has plenty of information in it. The most any editor would have to do is clean up the grammar and spelling a bit, and put the entry in GuideML format.

So: Submit your entry. It takes a while for us to get around to editing it, since the queue of submitted entries is about 1200 long. I've just recieved a batch of entries to edit that are nine weeks old. I don't have to have them in for six weeks.

GB, do you know of a way to get entries approved faster? I know Peta has posted that one of an ACE's jobs is supposed to be to find new entries on h2g2 that have potential. Does that move them up the queue at all?

As an ACE, I can tell you quite emphatically that I have absolutely no power over the approval process, and I suspect that Peta has little at best. ACEs are instructed to look for interesting articles to bring them to the attention to the rest of the community... in other words, find worthy entries for Peta's Picks. Being a Peta's Pick won't get your entry approved, but it will draw the attention of the rest of the community. We foster relations within the community, but we have no power over the Official Guide. That's up to you sub-eds.

Wait a sec. you lost me, didn't I already submit it? If not how do I? And about the grammer spelling thing, who will do that?

It has been added to the unofficial guide, but in order to make it an Approved Guide Entry, you need to click on "edit" again, and then you'll see a button called "submit." Then it will be submitted for approval, and, after some delay, it will wind up in the hands of a sub-editor, who will make initial grammatical changes and fact-checking, as well as a recommendation on whether it should be approved or not. The editors have final say, of course. Anyway, it will then reappear on your homepage in its edited form, and enter the queue to await its triumphant appearance on the H2G2 homepage (I have 2 such articles waiting).

ah. If I were an ACE, I probably would have known that. Thanks. smiley - smiley

Current time from submitting entry to recieving a definite reply, about 15 weeks. Unless your sub-editor is fast.

You have to link to pictures on another web site. You should have a look at the Guide ML Clinic. It will tell you all about the mark-up used by the Guide:

I use this colour chart for colourful text:
